Reference Help

A few weeks ago, listening to a Wright lecture, I heard him say that the story of God's command to Abraham to sacrifice Isaac cannot be understood without remembering what he and Sarah had done to Ishmael and Hagar. Does anyone have any commentary recommendations on this idea? Has anyone heard it before? (Can God's language of "Take your son, your only son..." be taken for irony and perhaps sarcasm in the Gen. 22 passage?)

The Bible does not give any hints of this.

It sounds like a classic case of a preacher preaching for too long and trying to make up new ideas so he doesn't get fired...

to clarify: what does the Bible not give any hints of? the irony and sarcasm or the connection between Ishmael/Hagar and Isaac?

Have you heard of NT Wright? I doubt that's the case.

I really wanted to jump in, but John stole my line. What do the rabbis say?

Off to make up some new ideas while I'm betting my bippy and building a bunker for when Canadian soldiers come into Canadian cities. With Guns.

it plausibly could be taken that way, yes. intersting. hmm, if i had a commentary recommendation, i would speak up, but i do not, and so this serves as an unuseful-let-the-writer-know-he-is-at-least-read comment.

i think some moslems say it was really ishmael that was going to be sacrificed...before isaac was even born...and the 'only son' language is just a remnant that made it into the hebrew text

my guess would be since Ishael had just been sent away, Isaac was 'like' an only son to Abraham. And maybe even before since he was the son they longed for.

Also, since i'm big on the "the whole OT is about Jesus" thing, it's possible the wording was chosen specifically BECAUSE it forshadowed john 3:16 and the like.
