Three links, two of which are worth checking

First, John Drury's sermonette here is biblical theology exemplified. Textually faithful; historically informed; theologically implicatory...

This essay is my own attempt to engage in the practice. You'll see the readers haven't always thought the attempt successful! :)

Third, Peter Leithart highlights a text that I think is quite pertinent to our talks on sanctification. The text is on Jesus' command to give, fast, and pray in private. Our enlightenment/pietist eyes have emphasized the "inner nature" of the faith: we fast in secret so that our actions are genuine and of good motive. We cannot fall prey to praise if secrecy is the format! However, much more is going on. In praying/giving/fasting in secret, Jesus' followers have not closed the public door and opened the door of the heart, they have set themselves apart, or "sanctified themselves," from the religious life of the time. This is a sanctification that would be noticed--by participants and contemporaries alike.

the number of "links worth checking" = 3. not 2.

AP,
Interesting essay. New ground for me so I have nothing to comment on regarding content. Except to say that I had never thought of the rider on the white horse as anyone but Christ. What about the song (I think by Jars of Clay)which has the line, "I see Jesus riding on a white horse..." That's proof right there:) I am perplexed by how Christians should interact in politics. I'm not the first guy to sign the petition for the ACLJ but I also am not totally put off with the idea of Christians getting involved in secular institutions (govt, education). Your essay was helpful and got me thinking.

Back to Revelation:Would you say John was pointing to a future Christ-like ruler/government or to the "possibility" of such.

Thanks for sharing AP.

i'm not sure he was pointing to anything...though it wasn't beyond his imagination. so, possibility would be accurate, but i think i have too many issues with "pointing to" when considering Revelation. too much baggage.

hey, btw, what's the ACLJ? American Civil Liaisons of Jesus? ;)
