Free(Dom)-ination by Culture
The other day I was watching television and a commercial for Botox came on. The commercial wanted people to have their doctor buy Botox, inject them with Botox, and, as a result, feel younger and better about themselves. So, naturally, it had attractive people dancing around. The best part came at the end, though, with its tag-line: "Experience True Freedom."
What the crap? Seriously. What kind of freedom is it that you are encouraged to artificially manipulate your appearance to be more attractive. Yet another expression of a culture of death: Avoid aging! Deny aging! Delay aging!
Since when did aging become disease? To paraphrase Stan Hauerwas, "It's as if some people think they are actually going to make it through life alive."

The true question is, "Are you going to shove a stick of dynamite up Fatty or not?"
DISCLAIMER: For those who know the context, that is hilarious. For those who do not, and may get offended, Crusty may also be known as Fatty.
Now, where is that BOTOX needle?
Crusty

I read today that botox can be used to treat excessive sweating and body odor. I think all you pastors should be allowed to keep a supply of botox in their offices for use on JR High guys. We are all going to die someday but we don’t need to smell like it yet.
AP, you hit on something unfortunate about our culture. As you imply, what is freeing about going into debt for injections we can't afford that disfigure our natural images, only to make us sit and wonder why we weren't good enough in the first place? What is freeing about wondering how real any post-Botox relationships are? What is freeing about selling yourself to the lie that life is better once we're not ourselves anymore, only to lay down at night and hope that no one ever figures out who we are/were? This is the age-old fight to keep ourselves hidden that started in Eden. As I read this morning, "There is nothing new under the sun."
I would like to second what AJ said. I'm going out to buy some black-market botox this morning.
I second what Jo said.
