Scattered political thoughts
- John McCain showing up on David Letterman and Sarah Palin going on SNL was smart.
- It is not mutually exclusive and might even be necessary to talk of "spreading the wealth around" as part of "spreading the opportunity around."
- It matters to me that John and Cindy McCain give away a higher percentage of their income than do Barack and Michelle Obama. It matters to me that John McCain has an adopted child and has supported adoption.
- Abortion can be more than a litmus test for evangelical Christians and D.A. Carson has a tremendous article here.
- I found myself wishing this morning for a political party that is skeptical of power--in word and deed; committed to life from conception to death; doesn't cater voting blocs based on language, race, income, or sex; dedicated to its mission in season and out. Man, do I want to be found in that party.

I haven't commented on all your political posts, but you certainly know how to make me think.
I, too, would like this party. Maybe you should start it...just like I should start the Canadian party I dreamed of this year (similar). Maybe we should trade citizenship for a few days.
The real reason I'm actually commenting is because I want to thank you for being a conservative with more than an abortion opinion. I waffled on the abortion issue for quite some time because I feel too many anti-abortionists are vocal, inactive, and ineffective. One's opinions about anti-abortionists cannot make me pro-abortion; that (along with a few other inner musings) has turned me pro-life. However, Carson's call for anti-abortionists to provide other options and long-term support for women likely to abort their pregnancies is healthy and the only Christ-like option.

Thanks for the post. As an Independent who usually votes democrat, I always encounter the pro-life litmus testers. However, I love to point out that 7 of the supreme court justices have been appointed by Republicans and for a while there was a Republican congress and President in power. Nothing happened. I just can't believe the repubs/conservatives (at least the ones in power recently) really care about the issue and are more pro life when they had opportunities and did nothing. It strikes me as a political carrot dangled in front of people to get votes. If it went away, many of those votes (at least many Catholic ones) would soon follow (in time) and the repubs know that, so they need Roe v. Wade on the books. What a tragic irony...
