The Difficulty of Preaching from the Gospels
The hardest thing about preaching from the Gospels is that some already assume what the passage means. Sometimes it's the preacher (I have been guilty myself); sometimes it's the congregation.

It's as if we think, "It's already been preached. I mean, Jesus preached it, right?" Sometimes the sermon is in Jesus' teaching; sometimes it's in the narrative. Digging in is very tough in the Gospels. What do you recommend?
Preaching begins with listening and silence. It begins with the recognition that the preacher speaks only because s/he has been spoken to by the Father in the Word through the Spirit.
A good place to start is Barth's lectures on homiletics. The nugget: Good exegesis doesn't need to be made releveant or applicable. Good exegesis is, by definition, both of those things because good exegesis has as its goal the freeing of God's Word in the power of the Holy Spirit to speak through the biblical text to God's present people.

Crap I agree with Crusty (the clown)
Crusty hit the nail on the head. I just started at a new church after going back to seminary and as I prepare sermons I will keep his wise council in mind.
